Creed for Riches by Dr. Napoleon Hill

11/29/2009 09:49:00 AM

I give thanks daily, not for mere riches, but for wisdom with which to recognize, embrace, and properly use the great abundance of riches I now have at my command. I have no enemies because I injure no man for any cause, but I try to benefit all with whom I come in contact, by teaching them the way to enduring riches. I have more material wealth than I need because I am free from greed and covet only the material things I can use while I live.

Willingness to Share One's Blessings by Dr. Napoleon Hill

11/29/2009 09:46:00 AM

He who has not learned the blessed art of sharing has not learned the true path of happiness, for happiness comes only by sharing. And let it be forever remembered that all riches may be embellished and multiplied by the simple process of sharing them where they may serve others. And let it be also remembered that the space one occupies in the hearts of his fellowmen is determined precisely by the service he renders through some form of sharing his blessings.

Riches which are not shared, whether they be material riches or the intangibles, wither and die like the rose on a severed stem, for it is one of Nature's first laws that inaction and disuse lead to decay and death, and this law applies to the material possessions of men just as it applies to the living cells of every physical body.

A negative mind spawns only negative ideas.

11/29/2009 09:42:00 AM

It is a physical impossibility for a negative mind to generate positive thoughts.

When you allow yourself to dwell on the negative aspects of life, negative thinking expands to fill all of your thoughts until there is no room for positive thoughts to grow. It becomes an endless cycle.

The habit of negative thinking generates more and more negative thoughts, which the mind attempts to turn into physical reality. The result is a life of despair and hopelessness. Develop the habit of eliminating negative thoughts the moment they appear.

Start small at first. When you first hear the inner voice that says, "I can’t do this," put the thought out of your mind immediately. Instead, concentrate on the task itself. Break it down into manageable parts and complete them one at a time. When the job is finished, tell your doubting self: "You were wrong. I could do it, and I did!"

Leaders take action even when they don't know the best thing to do

11/29/2009 09:30:00 AM

Imagine five birds are sitting on a limb of a tree. Count them: one, two, three, four, and five. Three of the birds decide to fly off. How many birds are left sitting on the limb?

You might be tempted to say two, figuring five minus three equals two (5-3 = 2).

I beg to differ. I suggest all five birds are still sitting on the limb, because the decision to fly off is very different than the action of flying off! Making a decision and actually taking action are vastly different! Leaders take action even when they don't know the best thing to do.

We all know people who have made New Year's resolutions or decisions to do something, but have failed to take the actions necessary to make it a reality.

Go ahead and use this story with those around you. They can tell you they made a decision, but if they haven't taken the action, then they're still sitting on the limb.

Maybe someone in your business made the decision to communicate or delegate more, but if they aren't taking the actions necessary to be successful, they are still sitting on the limb.

Or maybe you have decided to lose weight or invest money, but are still thinking about what to do. Action is the key.

Many times the act of taking action clears the way for the proper action to be taken. When you first put yourself in motion, it may not be the best action, but it can create a better action, another better action and another when before you didn't know what to do.

What killed Ranjan Das and Lessons for Corporate India

http://www.tamilbrahmins.com/general-discussions/3198-lack-sleep-cardiac-problems.html

A month ago, many of us heard about the sad demise of Ranjan Das from Bandra, Mumbai. Ranjan, just 42 years of age, was the CEO of SAP-Indian Subcontinent, the youngest CEO of an MNC in India. He was very active in sports, was a fitness freak and a marathon runner. It was common to see him run on Bandra's Carter Road. Just after Diwali, on 21st Oct, he returned home from his gym after a workout, collapsed with a massive heart attack and died. He is survived by his wife and two very young kids.

It was certainly a wake-up call for corporate India. However, it was even more disastrous for runners amongst us. Since Ranjan was an avid marathoner (in Feb 09, he ran Chennai Marathon at the same time some of us were running Pondicherry Marathon 180 km away), the question came as to why an exceptionally active, athletic person succumb to heart attack at 42 years of age.

Was it the stress?

A couple of you called me asking about the reasons. While Ranjan had mentioned that he faced a lot of stress, that is a common element in most of our lives. We used to think that by being fit, one can conquer the bad effects of stress. So I doubted if the cause was stress.

The Real Reason

However, everyone missed out a small line in the reports that Ranjan used to make do with 4-5 hours of sleep. This is an earlier interview of Ranjan on NDTV in the program 'Boss' Day Out':Boss' Day Out: Ranjan Das of SAP India.

Here he himself admits that he would love to get more sleep ( and that he was not proud of his ability to manage without sleep, contrary to what others extolled ).

The Evidence

Last week, I was working with a well-known cardiologist on the subject of ‘Heart Disease caused by Lack of Sleep’. While I cannot share the video nor the slides because of confidentiality reasons, I have distilled the key points below in the hope it will save some of our lives.

Some Excerpts:

• Short sleep duration ( <5>

• Young people ( 25-49 years of age ) are twice as likely to get high BP if they sleep less. Paper published in 2006.

• Individuals who slept less than 5 hours a night had a 3-fold increased risk of heart attacks. Paper published in 1999.

• Complete and partial lack of sleep increased the blood concentrations of High sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-cRP), the strongest predictor of heart attacks. Even after getting adequate sleep later, the levels stayed high!!

• Just one night of sleep loss increases very toxic substances in body such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumour Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-alpha) and C-reactive protein (cRP). They increase risks of many medical conditions, including cancer, arthritis and heart disease. Paper published in 2004.

• Sleeping for <=5 hours per night leads to 39% increase in heart disease. Sleeping for <=6 hours per night leads to 18% increase in heart disease. Paper published in 2006.

Ideal Sleep

For lack of space, I cannot explain here the ideal sleep architecture. But in brief, sleep is composed of two stages: REM ( Rapid Eye Movement ) and non-REM. The former helps in mental consolidation while the latter helps in physical repair and rebuilding. During the night, you alternate between REM and non-REM stages 4-5 times.

The earlier part of sleep is mostly non-REM. During that period, your pituitary gland releases growth hormones that repair your body. The latter part of sleep is more and more REM type.

For you to be mentally alert during the day, the latter part of sleep is more important. No wonder when you wake up with an alarm clock after 5-6 hours of sleep, you are mentally irritable throughout the day (lack of REM sleep). And if you have slept for less than 5 hours, your body is in a complete physical mess ( lack of non-REM sleep ), you are tired throughout the day, moving like a zombie and your immunity is way down ( I’ve been there, done that ).

Finally, as long-distance runners, you need an hour of extra sleep to repair the running related damage.

If you want to know if you are getting adequate sleep, take Epworth Sleepiness Test below.

Interpretation: Score of 0-9 is considered normal while 10 and above abnormal. Many a times, I have clocked 21 out the maximum possible 24, the only saving grace being the last situation, since I don’t like to drive ( maybe, I should ask my driver to answer that line ).

In conclusion:

Barring stress control, Ranjan Das did everything right: eating proper food, exercising (marathoning! ), maintaining proper weight. But he missed getting proper and adequate sleep, minimum 7 hours. In my opinion, that killed him.

If you are not getting enough sleep ( 7 hours ), you are playing with fire, even if you have low stress.

I always took pride in my ability to work 50 hours at a stretch whenever the situation warranted. But I was so spooked after seeing the scientific evidence last week that since Saturday night, I ensure I do not even set the alarm clock under 7 hours. Now, that is a nice excuse to get some more sleep.

Unfortunately, Ranjan Das is not alone when it comes to missing sleep. Many of us are doing exactly the same, perhaps out of ignorance. Please forward this mail/article to as many of your colleagues/friends as possible, especially those who might be short-changing their sleep. If we can save even one young life because of this email, I would be the happiest person on earth.

Winning the game

11/24/2009 06:38:00 AM
Hi everyone....

Any one of you love sports? I'm sure all of you do love sports. It can either just by watching or even by getting involve in sports. There are different type of sports namely football (soccer), rugby, badminton, field hockey, ice hockey, american football, baseball, basketball, swimming, archery, tennis and many more.

Some of you may or may not like the same sports. For instance some may like football (soccer) some may not. I love football (soccer), badminton and tennis. Does not matter which sports you like, the question that we need to know is how sportsman, sportswoman or a team of any sports becomes champion or the best in the world? Look at Tiger Woods, Nadal, Federer, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Lin Dan, Chong Wei, Serena Williams, Nicol David and many more. How?

Have you ever wondered about it? I'm sure some of you thought about it. I do.

Well, lets look at what makes them champions or the best in the world. Maybe you, me or everyone else could apply to our daily life.

In doing things, it takes a lot of effort. By going the extra mile, you can make a difference between winning and coming second. It means making extra effort when you're tired, when victory is not guaranteed or when the situation you're facing looks bleak. Champions routinely push themselves to be where they are.

Have you heard of people telling you to 'get it done'? High achievers always use this phrase to show their commitment to the task they have at hand. Once they have committed to winning, they will do whatever it takes to beat the odds and there is no doubt they will succeed. When it comes to being a champion, they have killer instinct. They know how to finish off a competition once establishing their lead. They even have no qualms to beat any opponent. They keep their sights aimed at victory and are relenting as they forge ahead.

Champions raise their game. They know the need to step up their performance levels at various stages of competition. To seize the opportunity to win,the champion digs deeper within themselves for the all encompassing desire to succeed thus taking them to the next level. Even if they come from behind, champions know how to win even on a bad day. They hope for the best and also expect the worst. They are able to pick themselves up and find a way to win even if it is not a pretty sight.

Champions play to win. They are not ashamed to say that they love to win. They play with positive, confident and are out to win. They take bold yet reasoned chances and believe they will emerge victorious. To be a champion, avoid playing with fear. Losers play with fear. They worry about making mistakes, errors, indecisive and doubt themselves. When they are in the lead, they are fearful of losing it. On the other hand, champions hate to lose more then they love to win and will do everything in their power to achieve victory.

Champions don't protect leads. Instead they seek to increase them. Losers concentrate on protecting a lead and end up squandering it. Champions step up to the plate and push themselves harder because they let the surge of confidence take over and increase their momentum. As champions, they live for those pivotal make or break moments. They compete to have a taste of those moments when an additional backbreaking push will propel them to victory. They want to have a story to tell and want their triumph to go down in history.

Champions or even high achievers are in the zone. They know how to climb into an optimal performance zone and ride the wave to success. They know how to get into the flow and allow victory to happen. They get the momentum. They understand and use momentum to their advantage. Every competition has momentum and the secret is to identify and tap into it. Champions increase their success by increasing energy levels and taking chances.

Champions does not play mind games. As champions, they are aware of the potential mind games their opponent may use and are ready for them. Some champions are born this way, some developed this winning attributes.

Lastly, be inspired by these champions and model yourself on them. If they can win the mental game of sport, I'm pretty sure you can win the mental game of life.

Your mental attitude determines what sort of friends you attract

11/07/2009 06:28:00 AM

Hi everyone.....

If you want to be a positive and successful person, be sure you choose your friends carefully. Positive friends and role models will have a positive effect upon you, while negative friends will soon kill your initiative.

Do not allow yourself to be lulled into complacency by the masses who believe mediocrity is an acceptable alternative. Focus on the possibilities for success and not the potential for failure. When you doubt yourself, talk the situation over with a positive and supportive friend.

Everyone needs a boost now and again; make sure your friends are positive and success-oriented people who always build you up. Not negative thinkers who always seem to find a way to tear you down.

Positive thinking

11/07/2009 04:44:00 AM

Hi everyone.....

Someone probably has told you to think positive whenever you are in a trying situation, be it personal, work-related or business. Well, the reason being is that the power of positive thinking is something that is a widely held belief. Most people easily accept that when you give or send positive energy, you can infect others with that positive energy and that they will return that energy to you. It is basically the idea that what you put out there will come back to you.

Positive influences are all around us. They exist because people love to feel good. People prefer the positive to the negative. You can likely relate to this. In fact you would probably rather be around someone positive and full of energy than someone who is depressed and moping around. People see that thinking positive and having a positive attitude can play a large role in their life. Positive thinking is very powerful and by putting it to work in your life; you can reap the positive benefits.

So, what is positive thinking?

Positive thinking is defined as thinking good thoughts and being optimistic. Another definition of positive thinking is the act of thinking good or affirmative thoughts. Well, basically its the same thing.

When it comes to positive thinking, there are no room for negative thoughts. Being a positive thinker, you'll always look at the good side of things. You will not dwell on bad things. Instead you will look for the good in them. Another way of saying is that positive thinking is a way to use your mind to reverse the damaging effects of negative thinking. Positive thinking does not involve negative thinking. Instead of thinking of what could go wrong, positive thinker think about what could go right. Positive thinker always look for the good in things and will try to find something positive in every situation.

In life, positive thinking plays a large role. A positive thinker will always end up with good life than negative thinker. Not only that, they will also be able to stay upbeat in any situation. That is why positive thinker do not dwell in negative. They will and can always look at the positive for any situation. Positive thinker do not let themselves get down when bad things happen. Neither they will let the negative invade their thoughts. They also adopt a different attitude than negative thinker. They will try to make themselves happy and upbeat. Other than that, they will try to stay energetic and will not allow themselves to get down. If they feel lazy, tired or even feeling down, they will do something to help bring them back up.

Positive thinking can be used in every aspect of life, from the little things to major things. It can be used to help you get through trying times. You can also use it to just make your average day go a little better. Positive thinking involves being able to see the good things, even in something bad. It involves being able to turn off the negative thoughts and replace them with good thoughts.

Positive thinking will allow you to avoid always going to the negative when something bad happens. It will also allow you to assume that good things will come your way and it will help you project an attitude that will help bring good things your way. Positive thinking is something that allows you to turn negatives into positives. It allows you to look on the brighter side of life. Positive thinking will open your eyes and your life to a world that is brighter and better than the negative one most people dwell in.

Positive thinking will help you grow and be open to success. Through positive thinking, you will be able to allow yourself to start to envision your life as being positive and powerful. You will open up the door for good things to happen in your life.

Now, lets look at positive thinking from a child's perspective or view.

You know what? The greatest teacher of positive thinking is a child. They are the best example especially for us to emulate. Children are the ultimate positive thinker. Why I said children are the best example and the greatest teacher of positive thinking?

They have not learned that life throws curves and that challenges are around every corner. They look at life as a big adventure. Maybe you should adopt that way of thinking. Think about it. Children seem to have no fear of new things. They will try anything once. They love life, are optimistic and happy. They love to explore the world and what life has to offer. They are willing to put themselves out there just to learn.

Children have to have this amazement for life. This is how they learn and how they develop their identity. It allows them to live in a positive manner. They do not jump to the negative because they believe there is good out there. They do not know about all the bad that the world holds because you shelter them from that.

Develop that child-like faith in yourself. Do not dwell on negative and start looking for the positive. Have you heard of the saying, "stop and smell the roses"? Think about it. A child would do that but the question is, would you? Chances are not likely. So change that about yourself. Whatever you do, slow down and take time to enjoy life. Stop filling everyday with your to do's. Enjoy life and you will soon find it is easy to embrace positive.

Let's look at the things children do that you can bring into your life. These things will help you look at positive instead of negative.

Children likes to explore new things. Instead of walking away from the unknown, they walk towards it. This is how they learn. When children are challenged, they get excited and look at it as a game. Children don't walk away from a challenge. Not only that, children loves to make a mess out of everything they do but they do it not just to make you mad. They make messes because they are learning and simply they do not care if it got messy in the process.

Children love to ignore rules. Children ignore the rules all the time. Often it gets them into trouble, but many times, they end up having a fun time simply because they are doing something they were specifically told not to do. Defying authority can be an adrenaline rush. Make believe is a big part of being a child. Almost everything you do revolve around pretending. The imagination is a wonderful thing. Allow yourself to go to some make believe place.

Emulate them. Start exploring again and accept challenges instead of walking away. Happiness can be messy and unrestricted. Break a few rules now and then; and let yourself feel like a kid again. Get away from your normal life and pretend you are someone else. have fun and you are sure to smile.

There's no harm doing those things mentioned above. In fact, there are other ways you can use the influence of a child to drive your progress towards a positive attitude. Observe the children. Watch the children play. Just see what they do and take note on how different their lives are from yours. How do they get through the day without feeling stress about every little thing?

Do not let yourself get hung up on the fact that they do not have responsibility. Responsibility should in no way hold you back from being positive. It is just an excuse. Excuses kill the positive attitude you are working so hard to build. Just focus on being child-like. Let yourself be free and just love life.

Positive thinking is powerful. Question is, how do we put it to work?

A lot of times people are drawn to the negative. So by implementing positive thinking can be some work. You literally have to train your brain to think positive. You have to learn how to get rid of your negative thoughts. It may sound easy but when you are used to thinking negative, it can be quite difficult. You will naturally be leaning towards negative. You really have to make a conscious effort to fight off the negative and stick with the positive. It can be a battle, but you can do it.

By thinking positive, your issues with removing negative thoughts will actually be made easier. Simply because your positive thoughts are going to tell you that you can remove the negative thoughts and you can overcome them. You have the necessary will power to stop negative thoughts in their tracks. You will have to fully immerse yourself into positive thinking. You will have to surround yourself with positive influences. You have to be very focused on the positive and be committed to pushing away the negative.

There are ways you can try to bring positive to your life and make positive thinking easier. You can start by doing some readings. Read about positive thinking and positive things. This includes reading books that are upbeat and you could also read inspirational things.

Use visualization. Imagine you being positive, acting positive and thinking positive. You should picture positive things in your mind and allow yourself to think about positive situations. Other than using visualization, you can use positive words. Try making your conversations and thoughts positive. When you are thinking to yourself, use positive words. When you are talking to others, use positive words.

Use your smile to project your positive attitude. Let your smile speak for you. If you do nothing else, then put a smile on your face. It will do wonders. Never allow yourself to quit. A quitter’s attitude is a big dose of negativity. If you quit, you will never succeed and failure makes it hard to keep positive. Quitting is also associated with laziness. Laziness is a symptom of negative thinking. By thinking positive, you will not feel lazy or even quit.

Be aware of negative thoughts. If you have a negative thought, you have to recognize it. Figure out where it came from, why you are having it and how to deal with it. Being a positive thinker does not mean you can avoid all negative things. It means you learn how to constructively deal with them and not let them take you over.

Be persistent with positive thinking. You cannot let even one day go by without making sure you are thinking positive. You have to constantly be working on it. Identify fears that cause you to think negatively. Usually if a fear is confronted, it ends up being not as intimidating as it first seems. Fear is simply a lack of being able to see that negative things will not necessarily happen. Once you learn to let go of fear and believe in yourself, you will see it is easier to stay positive.

Control and look after your emotions. Maintain the feelings of happiness, success and strength hence avoid feelings of weakness, fear and self-doubt. Do things that can make you happy. For instance watch happy movies, read happy books and listen to happy music. Surround yourself with happiness.

Lastly, hang out with other positive thinkers. Try to avoid people who are sometimes sad or even unhappy. Avoid those who speak negatively or who act in a negative manner.

Okay folks. That is all for now. I hope it helps. Appreciate if you could leave some comments. Do stay tune for my next article.

See ya.
